Maintenance is the practice of regularly testing and updating code to ensure the latest code and security patches have been applied.

WordPress - a content management system typically has 3-4 major updates per year, in additional to as many as 10-15 minor updates. WordPress Plugins are often updated to support WordPress releases however they have their own set of features which are continually changing. Finally WordPress themes are also regularly maintained.  

The content management system, plugins or themes can be a source of entry if not adequately maintained. 

Recently we supported a client who had a second install of WordPress installed in their account. That old site had not been updated in roughly 2+ years.  The old site ended up becoming infected and subsequently took down every website in the account. 

Code is constantly updating. The need for monthly service is to take a proactive approach to the health of your site and systems. In most cases, regularly monthly checkins can help you avoid a major incident.  Major incidents can include down time, loss of partial or all data, potential third party liability as well as the cost of several hours of emergency technical support.
